Coastal peoples diet consists mostly of seafood. Stories have been told of a young local fisherman trying to provide food for his tribe being caught in a sudden storm while fishing out in the ocean. His canoe was tipped over by a large wave. As he struggled on the bottom of the ocean, legend has it that a large fish swam under him, gathering him up on his back and safely delivered the young hunter to shore. He was forever grateful to "The Big Fish" and would often gaze out to the deep ocean for a glimpse of the fish. He began to realize that it was a sea spirit that saved him.
